Beginner’s mind asks this question: What would it be like? A timely phrase given the abundance of professional and personal pivots of late, and January as acting CEO of Best Intentions R Us.

Curiosity and suspension of prior learning (aka tried it before, always done it this way) are hallmarks of beginner’s mind. Intention and present moment focus interrupt the mind’s barrage of reasons to do nothing or everything other than attend to a goal. What would it be like to notice and dismiss the chatter in favor of small steps that invite movement toward sustainable change?

Beginner’s mind also lends itself to professional life with relative ease. It is widely used in relaxation and meditation practices for sharpening attentional focus of a moment while softening the noise of competing stimulus. With training, awareness and novel thinking create powerful tools for relating to stress and cultivating change in a variety of settings.

What would it be like to take a walk, write that first paragraph, or skip the coffee run? These types of questions suspend unhelpful commentary of potentially sore feet, painful writer’s block, why coffee is crucial or the 142-item to-do list screaming for attention.

Beginner’s mind also addresses valid concerns surrounding desired change. With openness and curiosity, the brain shifts from limiting thoughts of should, must, cannot, always, never, etc. to supportive solutions and adaptations that could work for you. For example, this nearly neuroscience free post began with: What would it be like to write a brief overview of a multi-faceted, evidence-based topic? (My apologies to science junkies, to everyone else, you’re welcome.)

With practice, and noted irony, beginner’s mind becomes second nature. What would it be like to extend patience to yourself as you would a friend along the way? Beginner's mind is incredibly useful on days when the couch won, the page remains blank, and caffeine jitters ensue.

What would it be like to take a breath, remain curious and begin again? Bolster your progress by celebrating and savoring steps made in this present moment and the next.
